A new lumbar support seating system developed for underground mine employees operating loaders and haul trucks has resulted in lessened injuries and weakness.
Perth-based Modern Motor Trimmers (MMT), which specializes in suspension seat and seating products for the mining company, has spent over five years modifying the pneumatically-operated twin air lumbar support.
The two-stage lumbar system is integrated into the backrest of an ISRI premium-quality T-backed seat. It utilizes the air supply from the seat's incorporated air compressor or the machine's air supply to fully pump up, supporting the operator's lumbar region and creating a buffer against shock and jarring.
MMT is installing the lumbar system to the premium quality ISRI 150kg-rated seating range, currently the only product currently available on the market to have a flexible back rest which can be angled for higher operator comfort and support.
Managing Director Garry Spouge, who founded MMT in 1992, said the company had refined and started to furnish the innovative seating product in ISRI seats in the last twelve months, as requirement for safer and more comfortable seating technology in the underground mining sector had started.
"Safety is the number one priority for all mining companies around The outback, and that obviously consists of worker safety and comfort, which was the starting point for us in terms of developing this lumbar support system," Mr Spouge said.
"Sore and unstable backs are the most common purposes for lost time incidents in the workplace, and our lower back help targets the lumbar region, preventing back injuries and ultimately on-the-job stress."
Mr Spouge said that MMT had previously researched and developed a similar
T backrest for underground mining device, but the prototype did not have a flexible lumbar support.
"We developed the initial prototype in the mid 1990's, but the patented system we're now using is fitted to an ISRI seat which has built-in flexible suspension decreasing to slow the seat suspension down, whereas a seat isolator decreases the forward and back jarring," he said.
"This seat was also chosen as it's the only one in production to our knowledge that reclines. Other manufactures have tested to start the 'T' back rests, but their seats are non-reclining and this causes a difficulty when operators need to adjust it for comfort
"We're really blissful with our newest design, and currently the observations we've gained has been extremely optimistic, and especially, that it's reducing accidental injuries and tiredness."
Mr Spouge says that as well as increasing operator ease and protection, the lumbar support also assists to improve seat life by reducing wear and tear and promoting right posture.
"Consequently, the benefits are extensive, either for the operator and also the supervisor," he added.
MMT's core market niche is the supply, installation and maintenance of premium suspension seats and seating products to the WA mining, building, manufacturing, engineering and transport sectors.
The industry is Western Australia's only authorized provider and repairer for German supplier ISRI, which is widely recognized as the manufacturer of the world's most highly developed driver and passenger seating products.
