Mastering Dog First Aid Is Much More Than Only Having A First Aid Kit

There is a well-known saying that "Curiosity killed the cat." But dogs are just as bad since they are certainly inquisitive and have a habit of going places and getting into things that they shouldn't. Even though this doesn't always end badly, they now and again do end up harming themselves by some means so it's a good idea to know some dog first aid.

Around the time my Lhasa Apso was three or four months old she succeeded in finding a previously unknown patch of burrs in the backyard and chose to play in them for awhile. By the time she returned to the house the burrs had already worked themselves firmly into spots on her face, her ears and her little fluffy behind.

It was late so the Vet was already closed and a trip to the animal hospital would have been too expensive. So she had to endure my tearful yet laughing attempts as I managed to one by one work those burrs out of her hair as she squirmed and yelped for more than two hours. They were matted so seriously and close up to the skin that cutting them out was not an option.

A tranquilizer would have been wonderful but I didn't have a single thing for her. And since there was no blood or really serious injury, going to the emergency hospital was a choice ... that time.

That is a saddening yet comical story to tell and hopefully an experience she has blotted out through the years. It was also a less serious thing although very painful and aggravating for both of us. But it could have been more serious.

As a conscientious dog owner you need to know at least basic first aid for dogs in order to be prepared for more extreme emergencies. You oftentimes will be able to save on Vet expenses for smaller problems like the one I had. But you may also need to be able to help lessen your dog's pain or perform life-saving actions until you can arrive at the Vet.

Having a dog first aid kit is without a doubt a wise decision but you also need to know what to do in an emergency. Always keep phone numbers readily accessible for both your regular Vet as well as the nearest emergency animal clinic. And be trained in basic canine first aid for yourself.

I've never had to provide life-saving medical actions for my canine and maybe you haven't either. But would you know what exactly to do if faced with a life-threatening situation connected with your pet dog?
